Learning What Wasn't Taught

One reason Juneteenth’s history has remained widely misunderstood, or even unknown, is because educators say it’s not often taught in schools and that has a profound impact, erasing the history of systemic racism in this country and the contributions of Black people. In 2020, the meaning of June 19, 1865 is being seized more broadly by activists as an opportunity for the United States to come to terms with how slavery continues to affect the lives of all Americans today and is something for everyone, of every race, to engage in. This year, Juneteenth will be commemorated with protests, marches, a general workers strike, and opportunities for healing and joy across the country. It will also be celebrated as it has been for decades, with cookouts and parades, as well as church gatherings and spirituals, keeping in touch with the original tradition.

The Conversation Begins with Listening

On Tuesday evening, more than 100 Borough officials, faith based leaders, school representatives and residents came together at a forum in Wellwood Park to discuss, listen and speak about our town and the issue of racism before us in the current social movement. Borough and school officials, many residents, neighbors and faith based leaders and groups shared their stories, feelings, concerns and praise. The School of Light Church, dedicated to empowering a generation for purpose by developing gifts and basic skills through education, resources and training, posted a video recording most of this event on their Facebook page. Thanks for capturing and sharing this significant event.

Graduations Go Virtual

Congratulations to the Class of 2020 from Merchantville School and St. Peter School. Merchantville School celebrated the occasion by sharing a bi-lingual eighth grade graduation video and "babies video" for everyone's enjoyment. Their graduation video begins with a heartwarming message from class keynote speaker, Katherine Santos, who entered 6th grade as a non-English speaking student, and credits student and staff equality, companionship, kindness and tolerance for their success. On June 14th, the SPS Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation went live on facebook and youtube where congratulatory comments could be left by friends and relatives. This is the 90th graduating class of St. Peter School who can proudly call this school their "alma mater".

Gardening Good Works

Cindy Hertneck, member of Merchantville's Garden Club & Incredible Edible, will often be seen elbow deep in vegetation spots around town working hard to keep our community sustainable and beautiful. Every year Garden Club volunteers plant, weed and water an abundance of foliage around town including planters throughout the downtown, at Borough Hall, along the bike path, the Merchantville Circle garden, Morrissey Park, and adjacent to Cigar Alley. Please consider contributing your time to helping the Garden Club keep our town beautiful during this busy time of year. Contact Cindy Hertneck at (609) 472-4626 if you would like to join the Garden Club.

Sustainability Forges Ahead

The Green Team's Sustainable Jersey application for Merchantville’s Bronze certification was officially submitted on Sunday, just in time to meet the June14th midnight deadline. We will receive our first round of comments around mid-July. Thanks to the many people who helped to make this possible, members of our Incredible Edible Project, municipal partners and, most especially Dorothy Foley, who coordinated this six-month submission process and gathered then, organized all our required documentation. As we face increasing environmental and social challenges, residents want to live in towns that are actively working to secure a sustainable future. Sustainable Jersey towns and cities implement practices that lead to cost savings and opportunities for grant funds. This town is small but so amazing. Our dedicated residents, Borough officials and municipal employees are what make Merchantville such a great place to live!

MEA Farewell Drive-By

The Merchantville Education Association would like to invite students, parents and the community to Merchantville School’s end of year drive-by parade. This parade is to honor and celebrate three of our fabulous teachers - Mrs. Fields, Mrs. Batterman and Mrs. Gandy - who are retiring this year and to give them the proper sendoff they deserve! The parade is also an opportunity for students and staff to wave good-bye before summer vacation begins. The parade will take place on Friday, June 12th from 2-3pm. Once in the lot, cars will be directed through the staff parking lot and then turn right to drive down Centre Street. Retiring teachers will be set up in the staff parking lot if anyone would like to drop off or send well wishes. Teachers and staff will be standing on the sidewalk along Centre Street. To continue with social distancing, please remain in your cars during the parade and wave to your teachers from a safe distance. We hope to see you there!

#uKNIGHTed

On June 4th, Merchantville School's Chief Administrator, Scott Strong, published a letter to acknowledge the senseless murder of George Floyd and express the district's unequivocal commitment to empowering students with the skills and voice to make a change and stand up for what they believe is right. MES provides an environment promoting “No Place For Hate” where people are not only tolerant, but accepting of diversity. Students and teachers stand #uKNIGHTed in making the world a better place.

Food Shops in the News

Courier-Post writer, Tammy Paolino, recently penned a piece on "A food geek's guide to best dishes in South Jersey, still available as takeout". The article shared local places to find incredible "drive-by" food while social distancing. And, it was no surprise to us that two of Merchantville's eateries, Charlies Crepes and Park Place Cafe & Restaurant, took the spotlight. Featured were Charlie's seasonal crepes with crispy potato croquettes or spicy deviled eggs and, ice cream flavors from Chef Manganaro that compliment his juicy burgers and celebrate the region, like the Cherry Bomb or Merchantville Mudslide. And, on June 8th, Tammy featured The Juice Bar owners, Seth Amoah and Kelli Mouzon, in her article about black business owners in SJ.  The cafe is touted as "a healthy oasis in the heart of Merchantville" offering fresh pressed juices, smoothies, salads, panini and vegan options.

Happy 146th Birthday!

June is the month we celebrate Merchantville's birth in 1874! While current circumstances have caused states to ban public gatherings, such as parties and celebrations, let's toast the founding of our small but strong borough 146 years ago and, honor the efforts of the many public servants, volunteers and business owners who have helped to strengthen and sustain our community. As we start planning for the Borough's Sesquicentennial, Mayor Brennan and Council want you to know that they are committed to continuing their work on your behalf and moving initiatives forward that will promote progress and secure a vital and prosperous future for residents and businesses. Merchantville's history.
