New Outdoor Activities to Reopen

Gov. Murphy's Executive Order No. 147 will take effect on Friday, May 22nd at 6:00 a.m. allowing certain outdoor activities at recreational businesses, including archery ranges, batting cages, golf driving ranges, horseback riding, shooting ranges, and tennis clubs as well as community gardens to open with required social distancing measures in place. To limit physical interactions, the order requires outdoor recreational businesses that reopen to limit capacity to 10 people at one time and implement reasonable restrictions. Community gardens may reopen so long as they comply with the same restrictions implemented at parks under Executive Order No. 133. The order also relaxes four of the restrictions on golf courses, allowing them to expand tee-times to four players, allow the use of forecaddies, offer club and equipment rentals, and reopen restrooms with disinfecting and hygiene protocols in place.

Covid School Aid Distributed

Federal Emergency aid will help New Jersey school districts with expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The median amount among 654 districts and charter schools is about $116,000, ranging from no additional money in a handful of small districts or charter schools to nearly $19.3 million in Newark. Merchantville received $57,974. Gov. Phil Murphy says state aid to schools is in jeopardy as New Jersey faces revenue shortfalls in the billions of dollars and while it is welcome help, school leaders acknowledged it was just one piece of an uncertain financial future for the schools as the state grapples with a pandemic that is sure to bring considerable hardship to their classrooms.

Perseverance Pays Off

After 6-year battle a Florida couple won the right to plant vegetables in their front yard. Hermine Ricketts and her husband, Tom Carroll, planted in front of their home in Miami Shores, FL on the day a Florida law went into effect that nullifies local bans on vegetable gardens at residential properties. That ordinance, which was tightened to forbid vegetables in the front yard on the grounds that they were unsightly and imposed a daily $50 fine - had forced the couple to uproot a garden in 2013 that Ricketts had tended for 17 years. But, she lawyered up, reached out to Institute for Justice and after six years they won! An appeals court also ruled against Ricketts, but the Florida Legislature passed a bill protecting vegetable gardens, and last week Gov. Ron DeSantis signed it into law.

Rethinking Covid-19 in Children

AN article in the New York Times highlights new evidence that some children may become very sick, and we are beginning to learn more about who may be most at risk and what parents need to watch for. This past week there were reports of children hospitalized in different locations, including New York City, with a multisystem inflammatory disease. In addition, new research continues to be published describing the ways that the virus can behave in children, which is not always how it behaves in adults. Many of the symptoms of this recently described syndrome resemble those of a rare childhood illness called Kawasaki disease. While Pediatric Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome sounds frightening, the American Academy of Pediatrics reminds parents that this condition is very rare and if notice any of the following symptoms, call your pediatrician: a fever that won't go away; abdominal pain, diarrhea or vomiting; rash or changes in skin color; trouble breathing and, your child seems confused or overly sleepy. Your pediatrician will let you know if your child needs to be seen in the office or if you need to go to the emergency department.

MLL Celebrates Seniors

Merchantville Little League has been honoring their graduating seniors through pictures and Senior Spotlight tributes on their Facebook page. #13 Kallie Anderson is a Senior at Haddon Heights High School. #18 Alexa Sherr, a senior at Collingswood High School, came to our team in the summer of 2017 and quickly became one of our leaders on and off the field. #8 Kassidy Press, a senior at Audubon High School, is a softball player who came to us in her sophomore year and has played on our Girls Senior Team since 2018. We at MLL congratulate our graduating seniors for jobs well done. We know they will be awesome at everything they do and, will absolutely miss having them with us!

Kallie was named captain of this year’s softball team at HHHS and was one of last year’s Carpenters Cup Reps for Haddon Heights. When she was 7 years old Kallie decided that coach pitch softball was the best thing ever and she hasn’t looked back since. Kallie started her career pitching and playing the infield but, found her special place in the 2 spot on our ball field. She is an absolute ROCK STAR behind the plate and a great young lady out in front of it. Kallie will be starting Rutgers University this fall to attend their nursing school program.

Alexa in just 3 short seasons compiled a whopping 111 hits, 75 RBI’s and 11 HR’s. “Play Metallica for her” when she walks up to the plate- our coaches used to yell when she stepped in the box!!!! Alexa has led us to so many victories and she also became the face and the voice of our team. Every new player that has come through our Mustangs team has always commented on how welcoming that monster player Alexa is!!! We wanted her to know that we can’t thank her enough for doing that and also wanted to let her know SHE WILL ALWAYS be part of who we are! Alexa will be attending The University of Pennsylvania in the fall to study Nursing and we are sure she will become a leader in that field as well!!

Kassidy has always been a leader and all of MLL will miss having her in the batting order on our fields. She hit one of the most important home runs for her Mustangs in the 2018 Senior Little League State semi-final games when she took a fastball on a 2-2 count in the 3rd inning over the right field fence to give our team a 2-1 lead over Bayonne Little League that ended in a 11-1 rout. Kassidy is enrolled at the University of Delaware this fall to pursue a Sports Studies and Athletic Training major.
