The Stockton Sanitarium

The Stockton Sanitarium opened in Merchantville on October 29, 1884 for treatment of nervous affections and mild cases of mental disease. The 26 room home, originally owned by Senator Alexander G. Cattell, was located on eleven acres of land with the appearance of an asylum avoided and a degree of freedom allowed. Established by Dr. S. Preston Jones , it was a private institution without a board of directors or trustees. On September 18, 1889, a "lunatic on the loose" was quite the topic of the village and seems a timely story for Monsterville. A hypochondriacal patient escaped from the Stockton Sanitarium of Dr. S. Preston Jones, a renowned physician and expert witness in his field at the time. In 1889 residents of Merchantville brought charges against the doctor and his clinic. Among the ten bills of indictment found by the Camden Grand Jury on October 21st, was one against Dr. S. Preston Jones for maintaining a nuisance in the shape of a private insane asylum at Merchantville because his fellow townsmen found themselves annoyed by the patients in his private asylum. Born in 1832, he was listed as the Assistant Physician for Males at the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane in 1877.

GT Proposes Resolution

As the community's sustainability organization, Merchantville's Green Team is requesting that a proposed resolution be placed on the agenda for the upcoming Council meeting on Monday, October 25th, to convey to the Borough their support for Council passing a resolution requesting the Delaware River Basin Commission oppose the Dock-2 Project and the transport of highly volatile fracked gas through our region. This dangerous project would transport highly volatile liquefied natural gas (LNG) nearly 200 miles by truck and rails through our communities, endangering the planet and public health. All of Merchantville is within 1 to 2 miles of the train tracks and clearly within the Evacuation Zone in the event of an accident. We are in a position as a community to declare our opposition to a plan that puts our residents in danger. Resolutions opposing the Gibbstown LNG Terminal were passed in RunnemedePennsauken and Haddon Township. Moving this resolution, at the very least, will let those in power know that their constituents are paying attention and may help them make better decisions. If this project goes ahead, it would be the first major facility in the nation to liquefy LNG in a shale region requiring long distance overland delivery for export overseas. Opponents cite what they say would be the risk of environmental damage from the construction and from the operation of the terminal. They also question the safety of transporting 3 million to 4 million gallons of LNG a day through the Philadelphia metropolitan area to a site that for a century was a DuPont dynamite factory. If the Gibbstown project goes ahead, oceangoing tankers laden with LNG will be sailing past low-income neighborhoods in Chester, followed by the port of Wilmington, various coastal refuges on the Delaware and New Jersey riverbanks, and Delaware’s beaches. Environmentalists say they are hopeful they may be able to stop New Jersey’s first liquefied natural gas export terminal after an unexpected vote by the Delaware River Basin Commission to defer a decision on whether to approve its construction.

Scary Sun-Maid House

According to Food & Wine Magazine, even the raisin specialists at Sun-Maid realize that — as good as their product may be the other 364 days of the year — it's the last thing most kids want to see on Halloween so, Sun-Maid has set up up a tongue-in-cheek "Raisin House" that embraces kid's fear of the shriveled grapes. Located in Merchantville, New Jersey, Sun-Maid's Raisin House currently features plenty of raisin-themed Halloween decorations visitors can view from outside. The Jersey town has an annual tradition of rebranding as "Monsterville" in honor of Halloween, which inspired Sun-Maid to take over the Perno's house at 3 East Cedar Avenue for their own house of raisin horrors. Trick-or-treaters will be able to walk up to the front door of the house and take Sun-Maid snacks from an "interactive hand sampling wall" and one part of the house "will be turned into a 'scare corridor' where zombies dressed in red bonnets will hand out samples at the end — a place for you to confess your rai-sins."
