Pride Month Honored

In honor of Pride Month, the Merchantville Diversity Committee raised a flag to promote awareness of the history of the LGBTQIA+ community that has struggled to overcome prejudice and be accepted for who they are. We remember the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, June 1969, and commemorate how far we have come with promoting tolerance and recognize the work yet to be achieved in promoting acceptance and equality. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally - and, especially in our community. The Merchantville Diversity Committee strives to promote an atmosphere of respect, understanding, & acceptance in our community by working together with neighbors, businesses, & institutions become a community of greater diversity, equity, & inclusion. Merchantville School Merchantville School earned the "No Place for Hate" award again this year and continues to promote tolerance with a variety of activities & events, an inclusive atmosphere and safe environment for our kids to express themselves. The MES PTA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee works to ensure an inclusive education for all students.

Kids Celebrating Diversity

Merchantville School is "Thankful for its Diversity" and continues to celebrate student differences and distinctiveness through education and art. MES students share and learn about different cultures throughout the year and express this in artwork from the holiday season. As part of their "No Place for Hate" initiative, Merchantville School students highlight and promote the uniqueness of each student. In class, children have the opportunity to exchange information about where their ancestors came from, discuss the words they choose to represent them and participate in a Poetry Slam about diversity.

R-Camden Diversity Project

The 11orMore™Project was started by Dr. Cameron T. Whitley in 2018 as an initiative to promote LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff support and acceptance at schools across the country. Rutgers University-Camden is a participating sponsor of this project. The GLSEN 2015 National School Climate Survey suggests that most LGBTQ+ students have experienced harassment and discrimination in their high schools prior to coming to college. In fact, about 85% report being verbally harassed and over 50% report hearing homophobic and negative gender expression remarks by high school staff. The hope is that this project will showcase members from all across the campus community helping students to feel valued and supported in their identities within the campus community.
