More towns stop recycling

Recycling, for decades an almost reflexive effort by American households and businesses to reduce waste and help the environment, is collapsing in many parts of the country. Philadelphia is now burning about half of its 1.5 million residents’ recycling material in an incinerator that converts waste to energy. In Memphis, the international airport still has recycling bins around the terminals, but every collected can, bottle and newspaper is sent to a landfill. And last month, officials in the central Florida city of Deltona faced the reality that, despite their best efforts to recycle, their curbside program was not working and suspended it. Those are just three of the hundreds of towns and cities across the country that have canceled recycling programs, limited the types of material they accepted or agreed to huge price increases.

Recycling bench update

Recycling Bench Update: Our bins should arrive in a week. In the meantime, please start collection of the following items: Grocery bags, Bread bags, Dry cleaning bags, Newspaper sleeves, Ziploc and other reclosable bags, Bubble wrap, Cereal bags, Produce bags, Ice bags, Wood pellet bags, Case overwrap and Salt bags. Simply bag them up in a trash bag or a large grocery bag, and once the collection bins are placed in town, you can begin the drop-off. Our goal is 500 lbs. of materials between EARTH DAY (4/22) and October 22nd. Putting a collection bin beside your trash can at home can help your family make good decisions about waste disposal. BUSINESS OWNERS: We are in need of locations in town willing to host a collection bin for the 6 month period. Besides hosting the bin you will have no responsibilities, as volunteers will collect the materials on a regular basis. Please reach out to me on facebook or at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to offer your space.

Collective Arts Launch

Collective Arts is launching in New Jersey. Join us at Blue Monkey on April 1st starting at 5PM for our New Jersey premier! We will have an artist pop up with New Jersey Artist Sean Lugo. Collective Arts Brewing is a grassroots craft brewery that aims to fuse the creativity of craft beer with the inspired talents of emerging artists and musicians. Collective Arts Brewing was founded on two beliefs: The first that creativity fosters creativity. And the second, that creativity yields delicious pints. We feature limited-edition works of art on our beer cans and labels, and we work to make sure the liquid on the inside is as diverse and creative as the artists we profile.

Scouts cleaning up

Saturday was a phenomenal day for Troop 119, Merchantville. Both the Girl’s Troop and Boy’s Troop worked hard to clean up the remnants of fall and winter to keep Merchantville the Borough beautiful. We're grateful for the participation of many service groups like the scouts in supporting the needs of our town.

Irish Basketball on the right track

In a season where it’s experienced ups and downs, the Camden Catholic High School boys’ basketball team looks to have taken a turn for the better. Winners in six of their last seven, including three straight, the Irish find themselves a much different team than the one that lost by 29 points at home against Shawnee on Jan. 19. http://ow.ly/zDoN308Tua7

Crusemire is in command

Crusemire, a senior lefthander, wasn't a first-team, all-conference selection as a junior and won't be attending college on a baseball scholarship. But if the first two weeks of the baseball season are any indication, Crusemire is set to make some serious noise. And so are the Irish. "He's such a quiet kid," Camden Catholic coach Bob Bergholtz said. "He's not a rah-rah type. But he's a fierce competitor. He wants the ball." Crusemire is 2-0 with an 0.70 ERA for the undefeated Irish, who are 4-0 and No. 17 in the Inquirer Top 25. Read more

CCHS has successful fundraiser

cchsCamden Catholic High School hoped to raise $50,000 during its first one-day giving event, based on a theme of the school's Irish roots and held on St. Patrick's Day. The luck of the Irish was with organizers, who reached that goal by early afternoon and went on to raise $63,302 by day's end. The school turned to alumni and current students and their parents about three weeks before the event. It collected "Irish Giving Day" donations through the annual alumni newsletter and letters to donors, in addition to phone and online donations. Irish "Giving Day" Thank You.htt p://bit.ly/1aqpy3e
