Sociologic Sustainability Basics

The median quality of life is perhaps best measured by the readily available access to the basic necessities of life. In its own way, it is a measure of success for the sociological development and a prime indicator of sociological sustainability. There are four keys to improve the median quality of life that are sadly lacking in modern society. These are viable education rather than merely teaching to the test, and including options for vocational and technical training for those people who are less capable of learning in a more scholastic environment; real-world, paying opportunities for those who have received an education; accomplishing this without the creation of a dependency class; and perhaps most important of all, the ability to provide all of this without overly burdening those who are already productive and contributing members within a society or community development.

Scarlet Promise Grants

Rutgers University has announced a new endowment called Scarlet Promise Grants. This program grew out of the Task Force on Student Aid and the Task Force on Philanthropy as commissioned by the Rutgers’ Board of Trustees. The student aid task force found that a growing number of students are unable to complete their degrees because of limited resources, while others can graduate but leave college saddled with significant debt. As a result, the board is undertaking several initiatives to address these financial challenges and to seek more significant private support for need-based grants and scholarships. Going forward, the board and Rutgers University Foundation will work to raise $3 million for the endowment within 10 years. The trustee gifts, announced at the board’s meeting on June 20, were made by Mary DiMartino DC’85, chair of the board until June 30, 2019, and her husband, Victor DiMartino CC’82; James Dougherty RC’74, GSNB’75, vice chair of the board; and philanthropy task force chair Ken Johnson ENG’66 and his wife, Jackie Johnson.

Mildew Resistant Basil

Four new sweet basil varieties - resistant to downy mildew disease which destroys leaves and has been the bane of basil growers for a decade - are now being sold to home gardeners and commercial farmers across the United States thanks to years of painstaking breeding and selection at Rutgers University. Two of the four varieties also show high resistance to Fusarium wilt, another important soil-borne disease. The four new downy mildew resistant (DMR) sweet basils are Rutgers Devotion DMR, Rutgers Obsession DMR, Rutgers Passion DMR and Rutgers Thunderstruck DMR. These varieties of sweet basil – one of America’s most popular garden herbs and the most important annual culinary herb commercial crop – became available to commercial growers last spring and are now available to home gardeners.

County Marks Slave Auction Sites

On Monday, June 17th, Camden County, City and State officials joined representatives from across the political spectrum to reflect upon the abhorrent and violent nature of the country’s slave trade. Together with the Camden County Historical Society, the group unveiled the second of three planned historical markers, at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Federal Street in Camden City, to be installed at former slave auction block sites in Camden City where African slaves were sold during the 1700s. “These markers offer a quiet but constant reminder of the dark and inhumane legacy of slave trading along the Delaware River,” said Merchantville resident and Freeholder Carmen Rodriquez. “My hope is that when people come face-to-face with the reality that this was a practice which took place in their own backyard that they’ll pause to reflect on slavery’s lasting effect on this county and its people.”

Car Show Judging Changes

Due to the size and scope of this year’s Merchantville Classic Car Show the committee is changing the trophy and judging process to streamline things. They will continue to review all cars that want to be judged, but will issue awards to the Top 88 vehicles by score. This method takes some pressure off our judges with regard to verifying year, make, model and class and hopefully recognizes effectively all of your hard work and efforts. They will also still have the annual Best in Show award as well as a few others. Car Show Pro show management software will be used to help power the event, as well as support judging. Remember the first 150 to pre-register get a free Merchantville Classic Car Show T-Shirt!
