Climb Aboard for a Battleship New Jersey Summer Tour. Now guests visiting the Battleship will get an extra hour to tour our nation’s most decorated and largest battleship. The Battleship’s Summer Tour Hours will open every day at 11 a.m. with the final tour departing at 4 p.m., which means you can stay aboard the ship to tour until 5:30pm. That gives everyone one more hour to climb inside the massive 16-inch gun turret, check out the bunks that the sailors used to sleep on, track a tomahawk missile in the Combat Engagement Center, and more! Rosemari Hicks offers a menu of lattes, chai teas and loaf slices courtesy of many Camden vendors and micro-business owners at her Nuanced Cafe, 225 Market St. in Camden. The decor of this newly-opened downtown coffee shop displays  similar hyper local touches including the wall in the seating area kept purposefully empty - with photographers and painters able to showcase their work and even sell it with all profits going to them. Hicks, a Merchantville resident for the past 20 years, hopes to see grow even more following the café’s January 11th soft opening. For now, customers can sit at socially-distanced tables in the café while wearing face masks. As a neighboring community, Merchantville appreciates the residents of Camden, Chief Joseph Wysocki, the Camden Police Department for the leadership they demonstrated by marching peacefully in solidarity to protest the killing of George Floyd this past Saturday. Since Camden’s police force disbanded and reformed in 2013 as a county agency, officers there have been hyper-focused on community policing. You will often see them walking beats or attending neighborhood block parties grilling up hamburgers and hot dogs. “We know that together we are stronger, we know that together, in the city of Camden, we can create a space where policing is focused on deescalation and dialogue,” Wysocki said. May 30th's peaceful protest and march in Camden was another example of their ongoing community engagement, and the very real dialogue that they are having with residents throughout Camden.

A recent release of survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows positive trends for Camden City in key areas including poverty, educational attainment, employment and unemployment. The findings come as part of a new five-year population estimate produced by the Census Bureau using data derived from the American Community Survey (ACS). Incremental improvements in each area signal broad quality of life enhancements for residents throughout the City and echo previous findings from state agencies and other reports. “Change doesn’t happen overnight, but in findings like these we are seeing the very real snowballing effect of progressive policies put into place to better the lives of residents in the City,” said Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr. “Our commitment remains on ending the crippling effects of decades-long poverty and economic stagnation in the city, and continuing Camden’s recent renaissance. We have a lot of work still to do, but this data makes clear that we are on the right track and headed in the right direction.”

Tom Wilkie and Reese DeFeo, members of the Knights of Columbus Council 6735 out of Saint Peter Parish, Merchantville, and their brother Knights help to foster a sense of community by preparing sandwiches to feed Camden’s youth. For the past nine years, Knights of Columbus councils around Camden County have made lunches for the youth summer camp run by Sister Helen Cole out of Guadalupe Family Services in Camden. For five weeks, city youth socialize and enjoy such places as the Jersey Shore and the Philadelphia Zoo. Approximately 50 lunches are made by the Knights for each day of the camp.
