New County Commander

At the Camden County American Legion committee meeting, on April 15th, Merchantville resident John Brouse was elected as Camden County’s Commander for 2021-2022. John served in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard for 8 years in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Shield which became Operation Desert Storm. He's been the Post Commander for Merchantville's FW Grigg Post 68 American Legion from 2013-2021. The Post has been active in Merchantville since the early 1920s and hosts events like the Annual PTSD walk to bring awareness to the Veteran suicide epidemic. In 2019 the Post celebrated 100 years and the Borough dedicated a portion of West Chestnut Avenue as "Corporal Grigg Way". The organization is currently promoting a "Build A Brick - Wall of Honor" at Wellwood Park.

Grateful for our Veterans

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization. Veterans Day is to honor living veterans. Often those veterans in nursing homes are forgotten. For the past several years, F.W. Grigg Post 68 members have visited local nursing homes on Veterans Day so those veterans aren’t forgotten. Post members are committed to mentoring youth, sponsorship of wholesome community programs, advocating for patriotism, promoting strong national security and devotion to our fellow service members and veterans. The Camden County Board of Freeholders and Veteran's Advisory Board will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony this Sunday, November 10th at 1:00 p.m. at Veterans Island in Cooper River Park on N. Park Drive.

American Legion Centennial

John Brouse, commander of Merchantville's American Legion F.W. Grigg Post 68, presented an American flag to Roger Grigg, nephew of the World War I soldier for whom the post is named, in a ceremony at Borough Hall on August 11, 2019. F.W. Grigg was in the U.S. Army artillery and died on October 12, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. Three generations of the Grigg family attended the gathering, which marked the centennial of the post's founding meeting on August 11, 1919. The family heard of their connection to the Merchantville post after the dedication of a street sign honoring Corp. Grigg in May. Roger Grigg is 87 years old, a resident of Toms River, and a retired teacher and school principal. He is a Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.

Centennial Meeting

The day was August 11, 1919. A meeting was held In Merchantville by returning local doughboys to start a chapter of the newly formed Veterans group called the American Legion. 100 years later to the day we will return to spot where it all started. A very special post meeting that is open to the public as we reflect on those humble beginnings and pay tribute to our Post namesake, 19 year old resident Frederick W. Grigg. The meeting will be held upstairs in Council chambers as it was in the "old Borough Hall" 100 years ago. The meeting will begin at 12 noon. Following the meeting all are invited to raise a glass at Eclipse brewing to young Frederick and the rest of the doughboys who set into motion a century of service to our local Veterans. Join in on a singing of "Over There" as we proudly celebrate Merchantville Posts 100th Birthday! Hope you can join us.
