One of Raymond V. Ellis' favorite images across classic literature was the lamplighter, a figure often noted only by the glow brought to the darkness. Aspiring to become a lamplighter for his faith, he began taking classes in 1973 for the diaconate in the Catholic Diocese of Camden.

For the next three years, he fit his studies - 1,000 hours of lectures and seminars - around his duties as president of Clover Federal Savings & Loan Association in Pennsauken. On Oct. 4, 1976, he was ordained with the diocese's first class of permanent deacons. Deacon Ellis died at 78 on Saturday, March 23, at his Merchantville home. http://bit.ly/10rxkP2
