Well, it was a rainy Saturday but several hardy souls showed up for some free saplings from the NJ Forestry Tree Nursery downtown between 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. downtown at The Station Coffee and in the West End of town at the Wellwood Park Gazebo. In honor of Arbor Day, members from the Shade Tree Commission, Green team and Incredible Edible Merchantville manned tables where residents could pick up free tree seedlings as part of the New Jersey Forest Service's New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign.

Seedlings were available on a first-come, first-served basis, and include instructions on how to store, care for and plant the trees. Available to residents were hickory, black walnut, bur and chestnut oak saplings, young maple trees, plant seeds, cloth pots and weed barrier paper. The Shade Tree Commission has plenty of tree saplings left and they will be available for pick up in Borough Hall starting Monday, May 1st!
