9/11 Tree Planting at the Victims Memorial

The Camden County Freeholder Board is partnering with Rutgers University School of Social Work, AmeriCorps Healthy Futures initiative and the New Jersey Tree Foundation to plant 11 trees at the Victims of Terrorism Memorial in Cooper River Park on Sept. 11th at 10:00 a.m. Traditionally, this is a day of reflection, emotion and history, but the Freeholder Board will also make it a day of service to our community. Camden County College will begin offering high school dropouts throughout the County the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and get a jump start on college through its new Transition to College Program beginning this fall. This new initiative is a commitment from the Freeholder Board and the college to support educational opportunities for kids that want to learn and want to pursue higher education. RFP released for produce vendor

A new program that would make it convenient for New Jersey residents with limited access to supermarkets to buy fresh produce is looking for a vendor. The nonprofit mobile vendor would visit senior complexes, community centers and other high-traffic areas to sell fresh fruits and vegetables to underserved areas. The first city to try the pilot program is Camden, a city with one supermarket. Assemblyman Gilbert "Whip" Wilson, a Camden County Democrat, says the Agriculture Department-run program could be a win for residents and local farmers alike, because it will feature Jersey Fresh produce in season. Since many cities don't have full-sized supermarkets, the mobile markets could provide an affordable, convenient way to provide access to healthy food alternatives. The request for proposal from vendors will be released this week.
