The Stockton Sanitarium

The Stockton Sanitarium opened in Merchantville on October 29, 1884 for treatment of nervous affections and mild cases of mental disease. The 26 room home, originally owned by Senator Alexander G. Cattell, was located on eleven acres of land with the appearance of an asylum avoided and a degree of freedom allowed. Established by Dr. S. Preston Jones , it was a private institution without a board of directors or trustees. On September 18, 1889, a "lunatic on the loose" was quite the topic of the village and seems a timely story for Monsterville. A hypochondriacal patient escaped from the Stockton Sanitarium of Dr. S. Preston Jones, a renowned physician and expert witness in his field at the time. In 1889 residents of Merchantville brought charges against the doctor and his clinic. Among the ten bills of indictment found by the Camden Grand Jury on October 21st, was one against Dr. S. Preston Jones for maintaining a nuisance in the shape of a private insane asylum at Merchantville because his fellow townsmen found themselves annoyed by the patients in his private asylum. Born in 1832, he was listed as the Assistant Physician for Males at the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane in 1877.

Vote Early In Town

Mayor Brennan is proud that Merchantville was chosen as an early voting location in Camden County. Merchantville is one of only seven towns in Camden County chosen to offer Early Voting from Saturday, October 23rd through Sunday, October 31st. During this additional voting period, registered voters may cast their ballots at the Community Center, 212 Somerset Street at voting booths available between 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sundays. This new option enables all registered voters to cast their ballot in person, using a voting machine, during a nine-day period prior to Election Day with no appointment necessary. New Jersey residents may now choose to vote, in person, when it’s most convenient for their schedule. Each early voting location in Camden County is open to all registered Camden County voters. Individuals do not need to vote in their registered municipality.

Safe Routes Grant

The Borough is seeking a grant for expansion of the municipality’s Safe Routes to School efforts, an ongoing project that seeks to continuously improve the safety and walkability of our town for the children and the entire community. Several community organizations wrote letters of support including the Green Team and Merchantville School. The New Jersey Safe Routes Program is a statewide initiative with a mission to partner with schools and communities to prioritize and implement opportunities for people to walk, bike, or travel by other wheeled devices. By focusing on improvements to support active travel by youth, we believe we can create conditions that are safe, healthy, equitable, and appealing for all.

Collins-Pancoast Hall

Completed in 1893, Collins-Pancoast Hall was home to both a building supply business and also served as a community meeting place and performing arts venue. John S. Collins, a sixth-generation Collins dating back to the seventeenth century, developed a successful coal and lumber business and then went to found and develop Miami Beach, Florida. Collins and his family's investment in the Miami area ultimately resulted in a building and tourism boom that helped the area grow into the urban community it is today. Though Collins left for Florida during the first decade of the twentieth century, The Collins family continued to operate the hall that not only served the business, but also the entire community as a civic and cultural center for numerous decades. A third-floor served as the Masonic meeting room from its 1893 opening until the 1970s. The Post Office used the building for a time, and the Merchantville Playcrafters used Collins Hall from 1937 until 1976.

P&P Wraps Up

That’s a wrap! Friday, August 6th, was the last day of Parks and Playgrounds! The program, run by the incomparable Patti Fields, offered a great 5 weeks of kids activities from 9-12 weekdays at the Merchantville Community Center. All the children who attended were amazing and adjusted to all the changes and guidelines required this year. A huge thank you to the Merchantville Police Department, Merchantville Fire Department and Department of Public Works and to Mayor Brennan, Borough Council and the staff at Borough Hall for their support of this recreation program. And, a special shout out to our wonderful counselors. The kids adored all of them - we are so lucky to have these fine young people in our town!

Crossing Guards Needed

The Merchantville Police Department is currently accepting applications for Full Time and Part Time Crossing Guards. Adult school crossing guards play an important role in the lives of children who walk or bike to school. Young children are more vulnerable to crashes when crossing the street because, until the age of 9 or 10, they lack the motor and cognitive skills required to safely navigate many traffic situations. Crossing guards aid children in safely crossing the street, and through their example, crossing guards help children develop the skills necessary to cross streets safely. In addition, crossing guards serve as a visual alert to drivers about the presence of children. Please contact Fran MeyersThis email address is being protected from spambots.
