Soon you will hear it – the crack of a bat, a called third strike, and the sound of children laughing as they enjoy America’s Pastime on a beautiful spring day. Merchantville Little League (MLL) is gearing up for the 2013 Season. Fields are getting prepped, uniforms are being ordered, and teams are practicing indoors at Merchantville School – for now. The fun officially begins on Saturday, April 6th with the annual Opening Day festivities.
Keep in mind that this is not just the start to another season; the devoted team of parents who run MLL has some big plans. A new scoreboard will be dedicated at Ed Roecker Field, next to the Community Center. This is the culmination of months of planning, impossible without the help of Colonial Bank, Mayor North and Boro Council. Players and coaches will then parade through town to the Main Field, between Willow Avenue and Cuthbert Rd. It is there that the first pitch will be thrown, faces will be painted, balloon animals will be twisted, and the ever popular Chic Fil A cow will make an appearance with a cooler full of his famous sandwiches.
Next on the calendar of events will be the MLL Beef & Beer Fundraiser, scheduled for Friday, May 10, from 7-11 p.m. at the Community Center. Mark your calendars now for an evening complete with a delicious dinner, ice cold beer, and entertainment by Merchantville’s very own Quiz Kids – all to benefit this exceptional baseball and softball program.
If you are in the crowd on Opening Day, you will see the youngest boy throw out the first pitch, and the oldest girl recite the Little League Pledge. This oath was written in 1954 by Peter J. McGovern, late president of Little League Baseball: "I trust in God. I love my country. And will respect its laws. I will play fair. And strive to win. But win or lose, I will always do my best." Let's “Play Ball!"
